“ Battery-operated, implantable medical devices such as pacemakers need to minimize energy consumption in order to decrease battery (hence, implant) size and maximize the time until implant substitution is required. SOI technology, particularly FD-SOI, has several advantages for these systems in terms of analog and digital ultra-low-power operation, as well as ease of implementation of floating switches that are required for stimulation.
As expected, the implantable device industry is very concerned with reliability issues, and is therefore a somewhat late adopter of novel technologies. Our work aimed to assess and show the potential of FD-SOI for these devices. In Low Power Analog CMOS for Cardiac Pacemakers: Design Optimization in Bulk and SOI Technologies, we propose new techniques and design tutorials for reducing power consumption in biomedical circuits aimed at qualitatively detecting biological signals.”
